How It Works
1Filration & Separation
Once the Spirulina biomass reaches its optimal density, the algae are harvested by filtration or sedimentation methods. The most common technique is using fine mesh screens or filters to separate the Spirulina from the growth medium. Because Spirulina forms small, spiral-shaped filaments, these can be easily trapped by the mesh.
In some cases, centrifugation is used to separate Spirulina from the water. This method is particularly useful in larger commercial operations, as it is faster and more efficient.
2Washing
After filtration, the collected Spirulina is thoroughly washed to remove any remaining salts, nutrients, or impurities from the cultivation medium. This step ensures the final product is free of materials that could affect its taste, texture, or quality. The washing process typically involves rinsing with clean water, preserving the Spirulina's color and nutrient density while removing contaminants. This careful attention ensures consumers receive a pure, high-quality Spirulina optimized for flavor and health benefits.
3Drying
There are several methods to dry Spirulina, each affecting its nutritional quality:
Sun Drying: The traditional method, where Spirulina is dried under the sun. It's not efficient for large-scale production.
Spray Drying: A common commercial method where Spirulina is rapidly dried with hot air, but some heat-sensitive nutrients may degrade.
Freeze Drying: A more advanced method that freezes and sublimates the water, preserving most of the nutrients and producing a concentrated product.
4Packaging
Once the Spirulina is thoroughly dried, it is ground into a fine powder that retains its nutrients and vibrant color. Alternatively, it can be compressed into tablets or capsules for convenience.
The packaging process is crucial for maintaining quality.
Care is taken to minimize exposure to light, air, and moisture, as these degrade its potency. Opaque, airtight packaging materials help keep the Spirulina fresh and effective.
This careful packaging ensures the Spirulina’s integrity, allowing consumers to enjoy its health benefits.
